Teachers
Welcome, Teachers and Carers!
Teaching your students Protective Behaviours can be challenging. How do you address sensitive issues, such as Strangers and Privacy, without scaring them or providing “too much information”?It’s a sensitive issue...
Teaching your students the language and principles of Protective Behaviours, and incorporating it into the general curriculum at school, or childcare, can help to protect them from potential harm as well as provide them with invaluable life skills. And it can be easy and fun.
Protecting Kids is Our Game(TM) provides specialised training for teachers to provide them with skills and practical ideas for teaching Protective Behaviours to children. We also have an extensive range of resources specifically designed to make learning Protective Behaviours fun and engaging for children.
Dobbing vs Telling
In my travels around the country providing professional development for teachers, I have had an overwhelming response to the concept of Dobbing vs Telling. We tell kids not to dob but, up until now, has anybody given them rules about dobbing? I define Dobbing as trying to get somebody into trouble vs Telling which is when you get your Early Warning Signs because you feel unsafe and therefore you need to tell an adult you trust ie. somebody on your Network. The ideal time for teaching this is after you have taught children about Early Warning Signs, this gives kids a clear indicator. Once you’ve taught the rules for Dobbing and Telling, when a child comes to you and says that someone hasn’t eaten their lunch, ask them if it makes them feel unsafe. Do they get their Early Warning Signs, or are they trying to get somebody into trouble? Students will soon tire of these questions and the rate of dobbing will begin to decrease. Teachers love this concept for its simplicity and we receive lots of feedback that they are able to implement it immediately to great effect.
