Parents
Welcome, Parents and Care-Givers!
Teaching your children Protective Behaviours can be one of the most challenging aspects of parenting. How do you prepare them for the potential dangers that exist in the world without scaring them or providing “too much information”?It’s a sensitive issue...
Teaching your children the language and principles of Protective Behaviours as young as possible can help to protect them from potential harm as well as provide them with invaluable life skills. And it can be easy and fun.
This page is specifically for Parents and Care-Givers and will be updated on a regular basis with information and advice. If you have a particular issue you want us to address or you have any questions you can click here to email our Director, Holly-ann Martin. We look forward to hearing from you!
Currently Cyber Safety is a concern for parents and below are some suggestions for keeping your kids safe online - for a more information please refer to The Parent’s Helping Handbook or visit www.netalert.gov.au.
- Have the computer set up in a family area so it must be used openly.
- Set time limits and identify sites permitted for visiting.
- Reinforce using the Three Safety Questions whilst online.
- Encourage your children to use an anonymous online name which is not gender specific.
- Be vigilant about only using webcam under supervision.
- Discourage the use of headphones for private conversations.
- Talk to your children about strangers online. Children need to understand that strangers online may not always be who they claim to be and speaking with them online is just like speaking to a stranger on the street.
- Teach your children not to open mail from unknown sources.
- Encourage your children to come to you if they encounter any inappropriate or disturbing content that makes them feel unsafe.
- Have your computer password protected with each child as an individual user and yourself as the Administrator. This will allow you to monitor sites visited and restrict the sites accessible according to age.
- Have your child enter into a Cyber Agreement*.
*We have included our version of a Cyber Agreement here, feel free to download and use.
