A new approach to the Protective Behaviours Programme

Protecting Kids is Our Game was created in 2006 out of a need for a new, child-centred approach to Protective Behaviours and comprehensive, practical resources to effectively teach children the themes, core concepts and strategies of the Protective Behaviours Programme.

We believe that Protective Behaviours plays an important role in preventing child abuse by providing children with key benchmarks for appropriate behaviour, allowing them to identify unsafe situations and seek help immediately - and persist in seeking help until they feel safe again. All too often, Protective Behaviours is introduced to children after a critical incident has occurred and, whilst these important life skills are valuable for all children, the strength of Protective Behaviours lies in empowering children themselves to be proactive about their own safety.

The Protective Behaviours Programme should be employed as a proactive, preventative approach for ALL children including those identified as being at risk.

What makes our Programme special?
Our training and resources are derived from a combination of more than 20 years of experience teaching Protective Behaviours to children and the extraordinary imagination and determination of our Director, Holly-ann Martin.

Holly-ann has taken the conventional Protective Behaviours Programme, as developed by Peg Flandreau West in the 1970's, and added complementary components, such as Public and Private as a whole concept and Secrets, to complete the circle of safety for children. In addition to this, she has created a 10 week lesson plan with fun, practical resources for teachers and parents to do with children to reinforce the themes, concepts and strategies of the Protective Behaviours Programme. Her teaching methods have been tried and tested in a variety of school settings with children of all developmental levels.

"Teaching Protective Behaviours should be easy and learning can be fun!"
